Melbourne City have won their first trophy in their short history after defeating Sydney FC 1-0 in the FFA Cup final at Aami Park.
A record cup crowd of 18,751 saw Tim Cahill score the only goal in what was an intriguing match.
The first half was close as both teams found it difficult to create plenty of scoring opportunities.
The best chance in the first half went to Cahill as his header from a set piece was placed wide of the goals.
The first half ended 0-0 with both team be looking for the first goal to break this game open.
Sydney FC striker Alex Brosque had a half chance that was missed early in the second half.
Not long after, a Ivan Franjic cross was able to find Tim Cahill unmarked in the box and scored a header to give City a 1-0 lead after 51 minutes.
In the 70th minute, a header from Sydney FC striker Bobo was cleared on the goal-line by Michael Jakobsen to keep the score at 1-0.
There were some intense final minutes with Sydney having a penalty shout rejected and the pressure being on Melbourne City but were able to hold on for their first FFA Cup win.
City’s Bruno Fornaroli won the Mark Viduka medal which is awarded to the best player in the final.
Disappointment for Sydney FC as they could not break their 7 year trophy drought but being on top of the A-League table right now should give them confidence that silverware is not far away.
Melbourne City will be pleased that they have won their first silverware but there won’t be too much time to celebrate as they have to regroup and get ready for this weekend’s league match against Brisbane Roar this Saturday night.
