Are PSG Better Off Without Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Paris Saint Germain have been champions of the French league in the past four seasons and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was pivotal in those title wins.

Now he has moved to Manchester United, have PSG been able to continue their dominance without him or has the team fallen? It is a question that is hard to answer now since the season is barely two months on but early indications suggests PSG are not as dominant as they were with Zalatan in the team.

They currently sit in second spot, 4 points behind league leader OGC Nice. In hindsight, second spot is not too bad but if you are PSG that is always looking to win the League title, then their form has dropped from last season. The team had a couple disappointing losses against Toulouse (0-2) and AC Monaco (1-3) which leaves them in second place and usually by now, they would have a clear lead in this league.

During his time at PSG, Ibrahimovic was nearly unstoppable. He played 122 games and scored 113 goals. Last season, he scored 53 goals in 54 games in all competition while in 31 league matches, he scored 38 goals to win the golden boot which and prove that he is the best striker in the league.

Now that Ibrahimovic has left, it was time for someone to step up and fill the void. Fortunately, they have been able to use Edison Cavani who has so far scored 9 goals in just 7 league games which is rather impressive. The one positive that has happened with the departure of Ibrahimovic is that has allowed Cavani to play as the central striker instead of playing as a winger for the past few seasons which has harmed his goal-scoring ability. He is not a winger but the club wanted to play both Ibrahimovic and Cavani due to their attacking presence they both possess.

The problem is definitely not the player who has taken his spot because Cavani is doing his job and scoring but it could be the team as a whole. Their list has changed with the inclusions of Jese Rodriguez, Hatem Ben Arfa, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Thomas Meunier and Alphonse Areola and departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Daivd Luiz, Lucas Digne, Gregory Van der Wiel and Benjamin Stambouli.

They also have a new manager in former Sevilla manager Unai Emery who replaced Laurent Blanc after being in the top job for the past 3 seasons. Emery is still getting the hang of French football while the players are still getting used to his game-plan.

Of course PSG would have preferred to keep Ibrahimovic and to say they are better off without him is hard to tell at this moment. However, they are doing fine without him right now as Cavani has taken his spot and scoring goals. It is about the team and adapting to Emery’s game-plan.

They have won the past 3 games which shows they are understanding the game-plan. If they can continue their current form, they will be fighting to get top spot in the league again and maybe get far in the Champions League.
