Real Madrid have claimed a record 11th Champions League Cup after defeating rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties.
Real Madrid started well with a couple of early chances until Sergio Ramos scored inside the 6 year box in the 15th minute to give his side a 1-0 lead. The rest of the half was tight as both sides created opportunities but it was 1-0 to Real Madrid at half time.
Atletico Madrid started better in the second half and in the 48th minute, Fernando Torres was brought down by Pepe in the penalty box and was awarded the penalty. Antoine Griezmann took the penalty and smacked the crossbar as he decided to go for power instead of placement. He wouldn’t rue the miss however as Yannick Carrasco smashed a Juanfran cross into the roof the net in the 79th minute to equalise and put the game into extra time.
There were a lot of tried players as extra time was played which meant more time and space and less pressure on the pitch. Both teams had chances to win the final in extra time but no team was able to score so the final was decided on penalties. The first 7 penalties were scored until Atletico right back, Juanfran hit the post to give Cristiano Ronaldo a chance to win the final. He scored and gave Real Madrid the win. Atletico Madrid had experienced heartbreak again in the final while Real Madrid secured yet another Champions League Cup.
