UEFA Champions League Preview

Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid

Rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will meet in Milan to be crowned the winner of the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid are looking for a record 11th Cup while Atletico Madrid are fighting to win their first ever Champions League trophy.

The two Spanish sides did meet in this same final back in 2014 where Real Madrid prevailed to win their 10th Cup with a 4-1 victory. Both teams have had relatively good La Liga seasons besides none of them winning the title. Real Madrid finished second while Atletico Madrid finished third. As this season’s League title and Spanish Cup went to Barcelona, this is the only chance for both Madrid teams to win some silverware this season.

Real Madrid have been a high scoring team led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez. They scored 110 goals in 38 games in La Liga and a further 27 goals in UEFA Champions League so far. They have so many goalscoring options from their starting line-up to their bench which is scary. They just need one of their attacking players to dominate and they will be one step closer to the cup.

However, they go up against the best defensive team who knows how to beat their arch rivals. Atletico Madrid have conceded just 18 goals in La Liga and only 7 goals in the Champions League so far which is impressive. Their issue for the Final will be scoring goals as they have only scored 16 goals in Champions League so far. Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres will be the main strikers that have to try and score but players like Saul Niguez, Koke and Gabi can score goals as well so they do have the players to win a final like this.

The key player for Real Madrid will be Cristiano Ronaldo. His scoring record in this season’s cup speaks for itself, scoring 16 goals in 11 games and is looking to be the man to get Real Madrid over the line once again.

The key player for Atletico Madrid will be Antoine Griezmann. He has been outstanding this Champions League scoring 7 goals in 12 matches and could well trouble Real Madrid’s defence and is proven to be a goalscoring threat in the big matches.

Like the UEFA Europa League final, this final will also be difficult to call. At the moment, Real Madrid are favourites because of their goalscoring power but Atletico do know how to beat them and could do it in a big final like this. It will be an enticing game to watch and which team takes their chances in front of goal will win this final at the San Siro.
