Liverpool sign goalkeeper Loris Karius

Liverpool have completed their first signing of this off season with Mainz goalkeeper, Loris Karius completing his medical and signing for £4.7 million ($6.8 million). This is Jurgen Klopp’s third signing for Liverpool after securing January deals with Schalke centre-back Joel Matip and Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic but this is his first off season signing.

The 22 year old German keeper is coming off a great Bundesliga season after keeping 9 clean sheet in 34 appearances to help his club Mainz to 6th spot on the table. Karius was also voted second best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga by his professional peers behind Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

He will add some much needed competition for current Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet who had been criticised for making too many errors during the past few seasons.

Karius said he is looking forward to playing for Liverpool.

“It’s a very good feeling and it’s an honour to play for a club like this. They have a special history and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield.” Karius told

Manager Jurgen Klopp said the signing of Loris Karius will add quality to the goalkeeper position.

“I am delighted we have signed Loris, he has had a fantastic season with Mainz and has developed into a very good goalkeeper since his return to Germany. I am really pleased that we were able to move so quickly to get him and that Loris has shown such a desire to come to Liverpool with a lot of other clubs interested in him.” Klopp said.

After an solid season in the Bundesliga, Karius will be looking to take Mignolet’s spot at Liverpool’s number 1 goalkeeper and won’t be there just to be a backup keeper.
