T20 World Cup Preview- Afghanistan

SQUAD: Asghar Stanikzai (capt), Usman Ghani, Ameer Hamza, Hamid Hassan, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Bulbadin Naib, Karim Saqid, Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Shafiqullah Shafiq, Samiullah Shenwari, Dawlat Zadran, Najibullah Zadram, Noor Ali Zadran, Shapoor Zadran

After finishing on top of their group in the Qualifying Group Stage, Afghanistan earn the right to be involved in the World Cup and it looks they will be there just to make the numbers.

During the Qualifying Group Stages, captain Asghar Stanikzai, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Najibullah Zadram and Samiullah Shenwari were able to make runs for the team. If they’re able to make competitive scores during the Wolrd Cup then keeper, Mohammad Shahzad will have to among the top run scores. Scores of 40, 41 and 61 shows he can bat and batting at the top order, he has to provide runs for his team so the rest of the squad don’t have the pressure to make the bulk of the runs.

The bowling brigade led by Dawlat Zadran, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Hamid Hassan were able to restrict teams to low scores which helped them in going undefeated during the Qualifying Group Stages. Hamid Hassan is one of Afghanistan’s most experienced bowlers and he has to show that when they face the likes of West Indies and South Africa in their group. He can take wickets and keep the economy rate down so if he bowls well then that helps his team claiming a few upsets.

As mentioned, Afghanistan are there to make the numbers but they could surprise a few teams. If they can find a way to grab a win or two, then they might find themselves as surprise candidates for the semi finals.
