Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has today announced his 23-man squad that will face Tajikistan at Adelaide Oval and Jordan at Sydney Football Stadium later this month.
There are some familiar faces along with some fresh faces in the squad including 3 uncapped players in Jason Geria, Alex Gersbach and Apostolos Giannou. Geria, who plays predominately as a right full back, plays in the A league with Melbourne Victory. Gersbach who recently transferred from Syndey FC to Norwegian club Rosenborg BK, plays as a left full back. Giannou who is a striker that plays for Chinese Super League club Guangzhou FC, was born in Greece but played for Australia at under-17 level so was able to be called up.
There is also returns for Robbie Kruse, Mitch Langerak and Matthew Spiranovic who have all previously been injured while youngsters Terry Antonis, Chris Ikonomidis and Brad Smith also earned a recall. Notable omissions from the squad include James Troisi, Matt McKay, Alex Wilkinson, Tomi Juric and James Meredith.
The squad looks relatively strong, adding youth with experience. With the lack of fullbacks in recent squads, it is no surprise that Postecoglou has gone with Geria and Gersbach. The inclusions of Kruse and Giannou should add more scoring power and more defensive and goalkeeping depth with Spiranovic and Langerak respectively. This squad has enough quality to win both games and this is what Ange Postecoglou should and will be aiming for.
SOCCEROOS SQUAD: Terry Antonis, Nathan Burns, Tim Cahill, Adam Federici, Jason Geria, Alex Gersbach, Apostolos Giannou, Chris Ikonomidis, Mile Jedinak (capt), Robbie Kruse, Mitch Langerak, Mathew Leckie, Massimo Luongo, Ryan McGowan, Mark Milligan, Aaron Mooy, Josh Risdon, Tommy Rogic, Mat Ryan, Trent Sainsbury, Brad Smith, Matthew Spiranovic, Bailey Wright.
